Base Units

In May 2005 the organisational structure of RAF Fairford was changed to reflect the strategic value the base now gives the United States Air Force and to allow the 420th Air Base Group to focus purely on RAF Fairford and Welford.  The 501st Combat Support Wing was formed in May to take command of the European geographically separated units which previously reported to the 420th ABG.

The new commander of RAF Fairford and RAF Welford is Colonel Wuebold who is a former navigator who flew on B-52 and EC-135 aircraft.  Col Wuebold came from Langley AFB where he was the Deputy Chief at the Force Plans and Generation Division of HQ Air Combat Command.

Colonel Lindner is the commander of the new 501st Combat Support Wing which is based at RAF Mildenhall.  From there he is responsible for the administrative and operational control of three groups and fourteen squadrons operating diverse support missions throughout the United Kingdom.  Col Lindner previously served as the Deputy Director of Plans and Programs at USAFE Headquarters, Ramstein Air base.  Like Col Wuebold Col Lindner is also a navigator, having flown in the F-4 Phantom.
